Corps listens to the
community and amends recreation closure
list
WILMINGTON,
North Carolina--
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, has completed an analysis
of its 44 recreation areas due to continued limitations on funding to operate
and maintain these recreation sites. After
receiving public and stakeholder input, the Corps settled on three sites for
partial closure out of the six sites initially recommended.
While these closures may inconvenience a few, the actions will help
ensure the maximum benefit for the most people.
All three of the sites, being closed on September 30th,
are camping facilities. They are
Ryan’s Branch Campground at
Philpott
Lake; Ivy Hill Campground
at John H. Kerr and Warrior Creek Campground (sites 22-28 only) at W. Kerr
Scott. The day use areas and boat
ramps will remain open at both Ryan’s Branch and Ivy Hill.
The other three areas considered were
Turkey
Island and Jamison Mill at Philpott Lake and Eagle Point at John H. Kerr; all
of which will remain open due to public interest and partnership opportunities.
